Anything you can incorporate into your diet that gives you more control over what you eat is a good step. Moreover, one of the huge benefits of dieting is that we learn how to take charge of our food consumption rather than just let it run away with us. Making your own diet shakes is just one of several ways to take control in a fun and tasty way and to stay on the diet as you do so.
You can buy diet shakes in cans or have them made for you and there certainly is a thriving industry of people making lots of money off of those who don't want to make their diet shakes themselves. But there are two reasons why that is not preferable. First, making your shakes from fresh ingredients guarantees that you get nothing but the best in terms of vitamins and nutrition. And secondly, pre-made shakes, even though they say "diet" on the can often have too much sugar and other unhealthy ingredients in them to do you any good.
Of course the heart of making a great shake of any kind is owning a great blender. But with that one piece of equipment on hand, its really just a matter of combining the right base with the right ingredient to make shakes that will be healthy and help you reach your diet goals and taste good too. There are three types of bases of any good diet shake and they are dairy, vegetable or fruit based shakes.
It's no mystery what the heart of any dairy shake will be. You start with a healthy dairy product and build the shake from there. Now, naturally if you have problems consuming and processing anything dairy, this base is out of the question for you. It's best not to try to use soy or other dairy substitute for a dairy based diet shake because for a good dairy shake, good old 2% milk is the way to go. And because milk goes so well with lots of other foods, you can come up with a huge variety of other things to add to the shake to keep them healthy and fun to drink for a long time to come.
Because vegetable based shakes are so full of healthy vegetable vitamins, they can almost be a dinner all in one. The V8 commercial drink is a good recipe to follow if you want to start with a tomato base and then add other vegetable juices and spices to make a delicious and filling shake. However, you do have to make sure the juice you start with isn't too harsh for your digestion which can happen because concentrated vegetable juices can sometimes be a bit hard on the stomach.
What is great about making your own fruit diet shakes is that you can get that taste of something sweet and still stay on your program. The best way to make a fruit based shake is to start with fresh fruit and use the blender to turn it into a smooth drink. That way you retain all the health value of the fruit. And it's a delightful way to get your day going or even to have a light desert at night that isn't going to make you fat.
These various starting places give you the start of a great shake that you can enhance and make better. Let your imagination get involved and don't hold back because adding variety is the key to staying on your diet and lose some real weight. For example, peanut butter not only adds lots of taste, it contributes valuable protein to a diet drink. A great tasting diet shake is also a great way to mix in any powdered food supplements or vitamins that go right down with the drink so you never knew you were consuming what is good for you.
It's fun to make diet shakes and adding something you enjoy to your diet can make it whole lot easier to get through a tough diet. It's also fun to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. So by using fresh foods in your shakes, you not only are saving money but getting the most food value from the drink. You can just focus on how great the shake tastes and let all that good stuff in it help your body lose the pounds. And a side benefit is the healthy ingredients will help your body fight off colds and flues and other diseases as well.
